SONIA WANG - "A TRIPLE THREAT"

TCC swimmer, Sonia Wang, finished her 8-year-old swim career by establishing three new 8 & under Southern California Swimming records this past month. Sonia, who tied the 50 yard butterfly record, in early November, broke it again with an impressive 31.23 at the Mission Viejo Turkey Classic. Two weeks later, Sonia broke the existing 50 yard backstroke and 100 I.M. records at the Circle City ABC meet.

Sonia’s swim of 32.22 smashed the 50 backstroke record (held previously by TCC’s own Kalyn Keller) by over 1.5 seconds. She then took aim at the 20-year-old 100 I.M. record, breaking that by exactly one second, with a 1:13.22. Sonia currently holds four 8 & under SCS: the 50 meter back, the 50 yard back, the 50 yard butterfly and the 100 I.M.

Congratulations Sonia – your TCC swim coaches and family are extremely proud of you!

Shellem and Tarazona Selected to 2006 National Swim Camp

Congratulations to Samantha Shellem and Noelle Tarazona on their selection to the first United States Swimming age group selection camp. This national swim camp is next May at the University of Utah. These two young swimmers were chosen by USA Swimming based on their performances this past summer.

Samantha Shellem’s selection was based on her sizzling swim of 2:08.05 in the 200 meter free. This time ranked her 1st in the entire western zone for 13-year-olds and top 10 in the USA. Samantha’s summer included winning Junior Olympic titles (100, 200 400 frees) and competing at Western Zones in Utah (backs and frees) as a member of the SCS team.

Noelle Tarazona, 12, was selected on her overall versatility in the 400 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly and 200 I.M. She ranked 3rd in the entire zone for 12-year-olds based on a cumulative score against all other 12-year-olds in the USA. This summer Noelle was crowned Junior Olympic champion in the 100 fly and competed at Western Zones in the flys, I.M. and breast.

The 4-day USA camp seeks to identify emerging young athletes in the sport of swimming. The camp will emphasize education and motivation which is critical in a swimmer’s preparation for continued growth from the zone to national level.

We are very proud of both Samantha and Noelle!!

US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Tressa Ries

Coach John and four TCC swimmers attended the 2004 U.S. Open in San Antonio, Texas, the first weekend in December. Roxanne Garcera, Alexis Mann, and Natalie Nichols experienced competition on a "plane" for the first time, while Nicole Shipman competed at her second U.S. Open. All four girls had good swims with several best time efforts. Roxanne swam both the 100 and 200 butterfly while Alexis Mann had her lifetime best in the 50 free (27.58). Natalie swam the 800 free and time trialed the 400 free (life time best, 4:27.67)). Nicole placed in the Top 24 in the 100 back (life time best 1:06.82) and time trialed the 200 back.

Congratulations girls on a successful meet.

TCC ABC Meet
April 2-3, 2005

Dear TCC swim families,

Once again, we hosted a great meet this last weekend. Everything went smoothly, thanks to the team of families who donated their weekends to helping out. We were impressed by the turn-out of workers. There were many extra people willing to pitch in whenever and wherever needed and many who worked much more than the minimum hours. This makes a tremendous difference in how successfully and smoothly things run for our kids.

Let’s look forward to our next meet in July. Volunteer sign ups will begin around the first week of June in the swim office.

Thanks to everyone!

The TCC Coaches

January 2, 2004: New 2004 Swim Times

Please note that the 2004 Junior Olympic swim times have been changed for both short and long course. Most of the times are faster and are not able to be used for both seasons (times are not able to be crossed over from short to long course).
Reason: Southern California is trying to make the J.O. meets more competitive and shorter in length of time.

The 2004 Senior National times have also been changed. Most of the time changes are much slower.
Reason: U.S. Swimming is trying to give the Junior National level swimmers, who would probably not make the old standards, an opportunity to compete at a higher level.
