WET AND WILD 2006 U.S. OPEN

Posted Dec. 19, 2006: “Battling the rain, the ice, the snow and some of our best USA swimmers, I think our four TCC youngsters did a great job,” said Head Coach John Ries referring to the 2006 U.S. Open held in Lafayette, Indiana. The TCC group traveled to Indiana on November 29th and competed, the next 3 days, against some of the best swimmers this country has to offer (Michael Phelps, Katie Hoff, Ryan Lochte, Kaitlin Sandeno, etc.)

Noelle Tarazona, 13, competed in the 200 fly and 400 I.M. and had tremendous swims. “This was Noelle’s first national competition and she handled it like a pro. She was very impressive for a 13-year-old and had awesome swims,” were the sentiments expressed by her head coach. Noelle qualified for finals, placing 22nd in the 200 meter fly (2:18.56) and 22nd in the 400 meter I.M. (5:00.87).

Samantha Shellem, 14, swam the 200, 400 and 800 meter freestyles. She placed 39th in the 800 (9:12.53), 41st in the 400 (4:28.38), and 51st in the 200 (2:07.91). “Sam had very solid swims and made positive steps for the rest of the season. She also is very young and handled the meet nicely,” said Coach John.

David Chen, 16, placed 63rd in the 200 meter fly (58.88) and time-trialed the 200 meter fly (2:07.91). “David had very good swims and for his first national meet did a super job,” stated his coach.

Courtney Eads, 20, had a full event schedule competing in the 200 and 400 free, the 100 and 200 fly and the 200 and 400 I.M. This was not Courtney’s best meet. However, Courtney will learn from this and will get stronger as the season moves on,” stated John.

“I thought overall we swam pretty well. It is always a great learning experience to have to travel and compete against some of the nation’s best. I know this will help all of them in future events,” expressed a proud head coach.
